Weekly Events Round Up April 24-30

General Information

Sign up for Organic Recycling Pick Up today! The City of Minneapolis will start picking up organic waste separately from recycling and trash starting in August if homes opt-in to the program. Learn more here. Alternately, organics drop off at South Transfer Station (2850 20th Avenue South) is open to residents Tuesday-Friday from 12:30-7:30pm and Saturdays from 8:30-3:30pm. There is no charge to drop off household organics. See the do’s and don’ts of the program and FAQ here.

The schedule for road closures during Minnehaha Avenue Reconstruction is available from Hennepin County. Go to the project website for regular updates.

The Midtown Farmers Market is seeking volunteers for this season. Help is needed on Saturdays to set up, help customers compost or to take down when the day is done. Shifts are available 6-8am, 8-10:30am, 10:30am-1pm or 1-2:30pm. Experience the fun, enjoy time with your neighbors and community and get to know farmers. Family Story Time at East Lake Library (2727 East Lake Street), 10:15-11:45am. For children of all ages and their parent or caregiver. Talk, sing, read, write and play together in a format appropriate for young children. Share books, stories, rhymes, music and movement.

Twice weekly yoga classes for seniors at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (2730 East 31st Street), 10am-11am. Yoga for Seniors is being sponsored by the Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors for only $4/class. Friday classes focus on gentle yoga where you’ll learn breathing techniques, balance poses and relaxation methods. Monday classes focus on healthy, strong bones and you will learn safe movements to sustain and improve skeletal health. No registration is required. Spoken Word and Strawberries at Living Table UCC (4001 38th Avenue South), 6-10pm. This event is a benefit for Living Table and Be Heard Minnesota Youth Poetry Slam Team. Bake sale, slam poetry performances and free open mic included. Call Patsy Parker with questions (612-207-1442).

Saturday April 25

Earth Day River Clean Up at two locations, 9:30-noon. Join others in cleaning up the river corridor to celebrate Earth Day and contribute to the health and vitality of the Mississippi River. A free lunch from Parkway Pizza and Great Lakes Brewing Company will be served to volunteers after the clean up. Green Cemetery Tour with Transition Longfellow, 9:30am. A group of people will be visiting Minnesota’s first green cemetery, Oak Prairie Cemetery in Inver Grove Heights. Go here to sign up for the carpool for this field trip.

Home Tour Weekend in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Saturday April 25 and Sunday April 26. More than 50 homes and special locations in the Twin Cities will be open during the weekend for free, self-guided tours. The tour is meant to inspire home improvement projects and preservation ideas. Conversation Circle for non-native English speakers at the East Lake Library (2727 East Lake St), 3-5pm. Practice English and make new friends in an informal volunteer-led setting and learn about the library too. Neighborhood Night at Le Town Talk Diner and French Drinkery (2707 East Lake Street), 4-9pm. This special deal for the neighbors includes $6 burger with fires, $1 off all draft beer and $1 off kids menu. This deal will be available every Sunday.

Economics of Happiness Discussion Group at Lake Street Coffee (3223 East Lake Street), 2-3pm. This group discusses the film The Economics of Happiness using the film’s discussion guide. They will be taking on two topics at a time. Learn more here.

South High School Pancake Breakfast at South High (3131 19th Avenue South), 8am-noon. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children. All proceeds are used to fund special programming and extra-curricular student activities at South High School. The menu includes all-you-can eat pancakes, plus sausages, scrambled eggs, orange juice, milk and coffee. There are prize drawings, yearbooks for sale, student crafted pottery and more.

Heifer International Fair and Carnival at Epworth United Methodist Church (3207 37th Avenue South), 12:30-2:30pm. Games, prizes and a petting zoo are all part of this fundraiser for Heifer International and the Epworth United Methodist Church Youth Mission Trip to Arkansas.

Metropolitan Council Environmental Services Public Information Meeting and Open House on the West and East River Parkway Sewer Improvements Projects at Longfellow Recreation Center (3435 36th Avenue South), 6:30-8pm. A formal presentation and question-and-answer session will begin at 6:45pm. The remainder of the time will be an open house format.
